This suite of five pieces was composed for three musicians with multiple talents: a clarinettist with three different instruments (B♭, E♭ and bass) plus a flute; a flautist with talents for piano playing, especially jazz piano as needed in Part IV (piano 2); and a pianist with an additional B♭) clarinet. There are seven lines (hence 'septet' in the subtitle) so that the piece can also be played by 3-7 players with individual talents.

Only 2 clarinets play at any given time, so these parts can also be doubled. Also, the 2 pianos never play together, so those parts could be taken by one pianist.
