I think a libretto-in-effect - called "Harrigan & Hart's "Investigation" songster : being the only book published which has ... all the songs as sung in Mr. Ed. Harrigan's new comic play, "Investigation," was published in 1884 (not by Wm. Pond, unless the publisher was an alias, or something. Also, whether it contained just the words or the music too I don't know, not having seen it yet- but it may have the order of the songs. There seems to be at least a reduction of the overture scanned online somewhere, also, and several other songs from the musical are scanned @ LoC.) - Schissel (Franceschina apparently- going by Google Preview- mentions that this play/musical/farce had over 100 performances, by the way.)

Hrm. 13-man orchestra- it'll do.

Play Manuscript is at the Edward Harrigan Papers at the New York Public Library (Manuscripts and Archives division), according to Granshaw (2007) (Bibliography, p.135.)
