Nielsen was invited to London to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra in June 1923. For the occasion, his son-in-law, Emil Telmányi, was engaged as soloist in Nielsen's violin concerto (CNW 41). On the same tour, Telmányi played Præludium og tema med variationer, which Nielsen had composed mainly during spring 1923 and dedicated to his son-in-law.

Published in 1923 by Peters and so the first edition is out of copyright since 2019.
