The title is also spelled 'Deutsche Sinfonie'.

The first two movements won a prize at the 15th Festival of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM), and were supposed to be performed at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris. As the work was strongly anti-Nazi in sentiment (the subtitle at that time was 'An Anti-Hitler Symphony'), the German government succeeded in pressuring the French into canceling the performance.

Eisler's Op.49 was written in 1936 and his Op.54 in 1937, implying that he gave the Deutsche Symphonie its opus number (Op.50) when the work was not yet complete.

For the movements with text not by Brecht, Eisler adapted texts by Ignazio Silone, whose works are still under copyright in Canada. These movements are thus not available on IMSLP.
