Commentary on the movements

  1. [Chorale]: Auf Christi Himmelfahrt allein. The unusually oboe-heavy sound with two hunting horns makes the tone more muted than many festive cantata choruses, however the figuration is perpetually energetic. The style is similar to most Bach chorale cantatas, with the chorale tune in the soprano.
  2. Recitativo (Tenor): Ich bin bereit, komm, hole mich! Secco recitative.
  3. Aria + Recitativo (Bass): Auf, auf, mit hellem Schall. A trumpet here adds brightness to the texture with "radiant brilliance"1.
  4. Aria Duetto (Alto, Tenor): Sein Allmacht zu ergründen. "A duet of decidedly reticent, intimate character"1. The obbligato oboe d'amore here takes a part that might originally have been for organ, but is more appropriate on its current instrument. The duet is very long, however.
  5. Choral: Alsdenn so wirst du mich. A plain chorale setting (=O Gott, du frommer Gott).
